Do people become Christians because they are only interested in self-preservation?

It seems that many evangelical Christians try to appeal to a person's instinct for self-preservation in their attempts at conversion. Are most Christians in it to save their own hide? It seems that becoming a Christian to escape hell is not only non-spiritual (meaning a disinterest in God or others) but rather a primitive attempt to keep oneself alive and well after death.
